Pressure Tube

A CANDU reactor contains hundreds of separate zirconium alloy pressure-retaining tubes. Each pressure tube contains 12 or 13 natural uranium fuel bundles through which hot heavy water coolant passes to remove heat. Cool heavy water surrounds each pressure tube but is separated from it by a thin walled calandria tube. Heavy water fills the space between neighbouring calandria tubes.
