Project History
In July 2005, NB Power received approval from its Board of Directors and the Province of New Brunswick to proceed with the project to refurbish the Point Lepreau Generating Station (PLGS). Over the next 2 1/2 years NB Power will proceed with detailed engineering and procurement activities in advance of an eighteen-month shutdown referred to as the Refurbishment outage. The date for the start of the Refurbishment outage is April 2008. The primary work during the Refurbishment outage will involve the replacement of key reactor components (fuel channels and connecting feeder pipes). Upon completion of the Refurbishment outage, the unit would be operated for another 25 to 30 years. The refurbishment project cost is $1.022 billion and the cost of replacement energy is approximately $400 million.
